Chapter 13: A Masquerade

A few minutes passed and then, just as Quigley had predicted, it started to rain. Sarah smiled. She didn’t like rain, it was too cold for her. She liked sunny weather the best. But this time she made an exception since it was going to provide a way for them to escape.

It didn’t take long for Emile to seek shelter and, for an awful few moments, Joe wondered if the man was going to shelter near them. Luckily, though, he chose another grove of trees nearby. “Phew, that was close.”

“But as soon as we head for the rowboat he’ll see us and run after us since he’s still fairly close,” Amy pointed out.

“That’s a chance we’ll have to take,” Will said. “A slim chance of survival is better than no chance of survival.”

“We could wait a tad longer,” Quigley suggested.

“Wait for what?” Will asked. “It’s raining already. What else could happen?”

Quigley glanced up at the sky. “These storms usually don’t last that long. However, there may be a short period of time when the rain will be very heavy. If that happens, it might provide enough cover from the man so that he won’t see us.”

“I suppose we should wait a few minutes then,” Joe said.

As a minute passed and then two minutes went by, everyone became anxious since it didn’t look as though the rain would get heavier.

Suddenly, it turned torrential. On cue, Quigley left the trees and raced across the sand. The boys were right behind him and the girls brought up the rear.

As Amy ran after the others, she failed to see a sharp rock poking out of the sand. She tripped over it and fell flat on her face. The impact was so hard she took a few seconds to get to her feet. As she did so, Emile yelled out.

Amy dropped to the ground and stayed still. Through the driving rain, she caught sight of all three men converging on the others. As they made no sign of approaching her, she realised they didn’t know she was there.

She scurried back to the woods and crouched behind a bush, peering out at the scene in front of her. As the others were marched back to the woods, she realised she had to escape. It was up to her now. And, now that the men were occupied with the others, this was her best chance of doing so.

As the others reached the trees, she hurried towards the rowboat. As it had been beached upon the sand, she first had to drag it into the water. This took up a few precious seconds. It was extra hard work since it was just her. Then, a moment later, as the boat cleared the sand, she leapt in. As she grabbed the oars, she heard a shout.

She knew it was one of the men yelling out and therefore she didn’t even bother glancing up. She just took the oars and rowed as hard as she could in the pelting rain.
